Moon Over Buffalo
by Ken Ludwig
A farce by Ken Ludwig, Moon Over Buffalo centers on George and Charlotte Hay, fading stars of the 1950s. At the moment, they’re playing Private Lives and Cyrano De Bergerac in rep in Buffalo, New York. On the brink of a disastrous split-up caused by George’s dalliance with a young ingénue, they receive word that they might have one last shot at stardom: Frank Capra is coming to town to see their matinee, and if he likes what he sees, he might cast them in his remake of The Scarlet Pimpernel. Unfortunately for George and Charlotte, everything that could go wrong does!

Moon Over Buffalo Character Descriptions
Actors must be believable in the age range cited.
George Hay (Male, Late 40s-50s) is a very dramatic, commanding actor. He leads his own theatre troupe, and though a bit over the hill, still has aspirations to be famous. He’s a bit of a ladies man, but is devoted to his wife, Charlotte. The actor must be able to do strong physical comedy, which could include pratfalls, running, stage slaps, stage combat, etc. He also must play a convincing drunk.
Charlotte Hay (Female, Late 40s-50s) is a drama queen with a wicked sense of humor. She helps to run the troupe and plays all the leads, even ones she’s a bit old for. She is a consummate actress who still has dreams of being a star. She loves George, but is weary of his philandering. Actor has to be able to do an upper-class British accent for play within the play. Some physical comedy and stage combat required.
Ethel (Female, Late 60s) is Charlotte’s mother, close to her daughter, but not happy with her daughter’s choice of a husband. She works as costumer/stage manager for the troupe. She is also an actress, very witty, and doesn’t suffer fools gladly. She is very hard of hearing, which leads to comic misunderstandings.
Rosalind Hay (Female, Mid-to-Late 20s), George and Charlotte’s daughter, used to be an actress and a member of their acting troupe, but she decided that she wanted a real career and is determined never to act again or be like her parents. However, though Rosalind is repressing her dramatic side, it’s a losing battle. She has a new fiancé, Howard, but still has feelings for an actor in her parent’s troupe, Paul. Actor has to be able to do an upper-class British accent for play within the play and some physical comedy.
Howard (Male, Late 20s-Early 30s) is Rosalind’s fiancé, a weatherman, who considers himself to be in the “acting” business. He comes across as a bit nerdish, nervous, and very excitable. Actor must be able to do strong physical comedy.
Eileen (Female, 20s) is an aspiring actress, eager to please. She has a crush on George and has been having a fling with him. Eileen wants to be a leading actress with the company. Though she comes across very flighty and naïve, she will do anything to get what she wants.
Paul (Male, Late 20s-Early 30s) is a member of the acting troupe, who used to be with Rosalind and still loves her and wants her back. A dedicated actor, Paul has a subtle sense of humor and often holds the company together. The actor must be able to do an upper-class British accent for play within the play and must be able to do strong physical comedy.
Richard (Male, Late 40s-50s) is George and Charlotte’s attorney, who is in love with Charlotte, always trying to get her to leave George. He is a wealthy and witty man who is both amused and perplexed by the Hay family.
